Latvia, 1939. As Europe stands on the brink of war, young flautist Ieva and illusionist Toms are swept into a passionate and turbulent love affair. Their relationship is further complicated by surgeon Duburs, who offers Ieva his heart and a different future. Set largely in Duburs's beautiful garden, the film unfolds against the uneasy atmosphere of late-1930s Latvia, where personal desires and conflicts are overshadowed by a growing sense of danger. Through dramatic encounters and documentary footage, a nation waits in suspense, sensing that history is about to change its fate forever.
